How to Know When It's Time

There's rarely one clear moment, and many families worry about deciding too early or too late. Watching your dog's or cat's quality of life day to day can help. Signs to watch for include:

-Pain that medication no longer controls

-Little or no interest in food or water

-Trouble standing, walking, or getting comfortable

-Losing interest in the people, places, and activities they used to love

-More bad days than good ones

If you're unsure, call us. One of our veterinarians can help you understand how your pet is doing and talk through end-of-life care options.

Familiar surroundings can help your pet feel more at ease. At home, they can rest in their favorite spot, surrounded by the sounds, smells, and people they know best. We welcome you to make the space as comforting as possible for your pet and your family during a difficult time.

Choose a time and share your wishes

We'll find a day and time that works for your family. Let us know where you'd like the goodbye to happen, who will be there, and anything that would make it more meaningful. Visits are available during normal business hours.

Say goodbye at home

When our veterinarian arrives, they'll walk you through each step. Your pet first receives a sedative so they're deeply relaxed and comfortable. When you're ready, the veterinarian gives the final injection while you hold them close. Most visits last 30 to 60 minutes, and afterward, we can arrange private or communal cremation.

Support for Your Whole Family

Grief after losing a pet is real, and it looks different for everyone. Children can be part of the goodbye if you'd like, and we're happy to help you think through how to explain it to them. Other pets are welcome to stay nearby, too. In the days that follow, pet loss support resources from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) can help.

Aftercare and Cremation Options

After your visit, we can arrange cremation for your pet. You'll have two options:

  • Private cremation. Your pet is cremated individually, and their ashes are returned to you.

  • Communal cremation. Your pet is cremated alongside other pets, and their ashes aren't returned.

We'll talk through both when you call, so you can decide ahead of time.
